Hi Folks

The CALL FOR TOPICS has produced the suggestions for
discussion listed below. Additionally, there are a number of topics
from last month which can also be utilized. These can be found at
the MOQ website ( http://www.moq.org ). Select the Lilasquad link
then the Programs link then the "good suggestions" link (at the
bottom of the page).

Each member should now vote for the suggestion which they feel
should be April's Discussion Topic.

Please restrict yourselves to voting for one topic only.

When you mail your vote please either cut and paste from the list
below or state the number (and suggestors name if you want) of the
topic.

Cheers

Horse

APRIL DISCUSSION TOPICS

1) [Rich Pretti]

Leaving Quality undefined is a central tenet of the MOQ. We should
work towards clearly explaining why this is so and exploring the
arguments both for and against this position.

Sarah: "Are you teaching Quality this quarter?" "Yes..."

- You know what it is. No you don't. Yes you do....

2) [Carmen Flynn]

Compare those aspects of William James' philosophy (Pragmatism
and Radical Empiricism) that fit Pirsigs Metaphysics of Quality.

(Reference: P423 Ch29 Lila - Black Swan Edition)

3) [Horse]

Does the Metaphysics of Quality provide good grounds for the

argument that:

A) We should be vegetarians

or that

B) MOST of us should be vegetarians MOST of the time.

4) [Steve Bates]

In order to bring a pragmatic element into the discussion, state how
Lila has affected our lives from a personal perspective

5) [David L Thomas]

H.N.Brailsford has said "the crude issue of power... is always the
last of the realities that sensitive and reasonable men can bring
themselves to face".

What, if anything, does the Metaphysics of Quality have to say about
the realities of power.

6) [Rich Pretti]

Explore the relations and development of both ZATAOMM's
Romantic/Classic split and Lila's Dynamic/Static split. Preliminary
explanations in terms of a Hip/Square, Humanistic/Technological,
Aesthetic/Theoretic view of the world could be useful in examining
this view.

One pattern of understanding (Static Quality) must contain elements
of the other (Dynamic Quality) - balance, latching, yin-yang... this
seems to be an ancient split.

7) [Carmen Flynn]

With the article by Ernst Mayr that Pirsig quotes in Chapter 11 of Lila
in mind, explore the relationship of the MOQ, evolution by Natural
Selection and the various teleological explanations of evolution.

8) [Horse]

If it is true that, as Chomsky suggests, it is largely due to the efforts
(or lack of them) of the intellectual classes, that the rise in power of
multinational corporations and neo-liberalism continues unabated
should we look for a solution to this problem at an intellectual level,
social level or both?

9) [Carmen Flynn]

Take specific examples of Static Patterns of Value and explain how
and why they fit into the four levels of the MOQ hierarchy.

10) [Horse]

Pirsig refers to Dynamic Quality in a number of different ways in Lila
and his paper Subject, Objects, Data and Value. Is he referring to the
same thing or is it possible that, like Static Quality, Dynamic Quality
consists of distinct or different aspects?

11) [Horse]

In the event of an inter-level conflict is it ALWAYS the case that the

higher level of Value, as defined in the MOQ, has moral superiority?

Are there instances where this is not the case and how are they

resolved? How is it possible to recognize and/or resolve an intra-level
moral conflict?

12) [Horse]

To what does a Subject-Object Metaphysics refer? Is it a system

encompassing all western thought, does it refer to a set of beliefs

about the world, is it another name for Logical Positivism, is it

something entirely different, or is it as Strawson claims, a Straw

Man?

13) [Horse]

Does the division of reality into four levels of static value and

Dynamic Quality provide for a better explanation of reality or would it

be simpler to tack Value onto a Subject/Object division and avoid a

confusing new metaphysical position?
