Diana in your response to Roger and Dan these phrases jumped out at me.

I would suggest that the quality of the Lila Squad, sites, and
their discussion groups is primarily a result of "non-professional"
discourse. Indeed it could be said that the form and substance of
Pirsig's work is a cry for the "de- professionalization" of reality
though the "de-professionalization" of philosophy.

Henri Poncare, who asked, "Why is the reality most acceptable to science
[and philosophy, both by then solidifying as privileged realms of
professionals] one that no small child can be expected to understand?"
