In the midst of oceans of agreement (and gratitude, in fact) for your points, one very minor quibble
on a detail. You said:

It's worth pointing out that this is a quotation from Athanasius (he of the Athanasian Creed), and
underlies the Orthodox notion of 'theosis', which is the core of Christian mysticism. It's been
there from the start, it's not just a modern development (in fact the Modern developments have
tended to go against it, as with much US Christianity).
