Mark Heyman correctly critiqued Platt's distorted view of other human beings
who might be in a dire struggle for freedom and justice:
Borrowing the phrase of a prominent contributor to this list, "kill
'em all like germs"… requires you to check your humanity at the door.
Platt replied by quoting the following (adding to Pirsig's writing to fit in
with his own biases):
"Intellectuals must find biological behavior (killing), no matter what its
ethnic connection, and limit or destroy destructive biological patterns
with complete moral ruthlessness, the way a doctor destroys germs, before
those biological patterns destroy civilization itself." (Lila, 24 - parens
added.)
And then noted July 27th 2005:
Does this mean Pirsig checks his humanity at the door? After all, where
is his compassion, his sympathy, his caring, his seeking causes and
apologizing for biological behavior? The man is obviously a nutcase.
Ant McWatt comments:
Platt,
As killing can also be done for intellectual and social reasons and affects
the biological, social and intellectual levels your assumption that it is
just limited to the biological level is incorrect. Your parentheses in
Pirsig's paragraph (quoted above) therefore distorts the meaning of LILA to
fit in with your own low quality biases. As I suggested before - regarding
your political writing on this forum - maybe you should spend some of your
retirement time reading some of the excellent references provided by Mark
Heyman and Arlo Bensinger and then come back to MOQ Discuss with a
contribution worth reading? You once had the good sense to read ZMM and
LILA, so it can’t be outside the realm of possibility that you could also
pick-up a high quality political book one day. What about John Pilger to
start off with?
Best wishes,
Anthony.
