Dear Nathan,
The microbe you describe 17 Nov 2003 15:55:55 -0500 is alive according to my
definition (16 Nov 2003 22:34:43 +0100); not because of the behavior you
describe, but because it reproduces itself (in the right circumstances).
A thermostat never reproduces itself, so it isn't alive.
Supposed intentionality (how do you know?) is irrelevant (according to my
definition).
With friendly greetings,
Wim
