1. I'd like to note that chair (as almost everything else) is a
combination of value patterns at its creation without regard to how that
chair is used:
inorganic (wood or, 'oh horror', plastic);
biological (ergonomically designed for humans);
social (made not to allow us to sit with our legs up);
intellectual (if designed by Wright).
2. I think, Pirsig means specifically human society when he speaks about
social patterns of value. That's why he mentions anthropology as a
science concerned with social values. We can speculate about human
intellect only, and I would not expect any of it to be produced by a
very developed society of ants. No matter how ingeniously they find
their way into my kitchen cabinets, they are just a bunch of pathetic
looters which my society does not value at all.
It's my first time barging into a conversation like that. Sorry if I
broke any social rules. Please, let me know what is the proper
etiquette.
