LS, Hi again;
Some suppositions:
1. From my observation and participation in LS off and on over the last couple
of years it is my guess that most, if not all of the participants including
myself, grew up primarily under the influence of Western philosophy (SOM) and
Judeo-Christian religions.
2. Exposure to other "Ways" by LS members has been primarily secondary, by
individual seeking rather than through societal training or osmosis.
3. Pirsig's Quest, as documented in ZMM and Lila, seeks to not just to subsume
SOM with MOQ but to reconcile Eastern and Western philosophies.
Keith asks:
> How are those of us still mired in a subject-object view of the world to wrap our minds > around this transformation?
To which I add: After we have wrapped our minds around this transformation,
What about Zen, the Lost Ox, and such ? The subject line might be: Pirsig's
Zen is all Greek to me.
Might be an interesting relief from the current "Wild West" dialog which seems
to have invaded both MD and LS. If my suppositions are correct we will all be
equal footing. Not having a leg to stand on!
Two of my recent reads "The Awakening of the West, The Encounter of Buddhism
and Western Culture" and "Buddhism Without Beliefs" both by Stephen Bachelor
have opened my interest in this approach to understanding Pirsig.
