MD Clockwise

Hi all,
Time seems to a recurring theme here with several names of scientists
and philosophers coming up: Prigogine, Kant, Paul Davies, Einstein and,
most recently, Julian Barbour (thanks Peter).

Well let me share some amusing thoughts. This evening walking home from
work, I was dwelling about the problems of scheduling ones routine and
got around to thinking about John Cleese in his movie "Clockwise". In
the movie, Cleese is a highly respected and successful school headmaster
who has become an expert in achieving success through time management.
The plot develops when Cleese is travelling to give a speech on time
management to a headmasters' conference and his careful travel plans
unravel into total chaos as a result of a minor mistake.

IMO this is a wonderful metaphor for our rational world: We think that
we have achieved control by becoming masters of rational (SO) thinking,
but it doesn't take much for our society to unravel into total chaos, as
happens from time to time (read as wars, revolutions, economic collapses
etc.).

Rational thinking is not bad or wrong - neither is good time management,
but neither of them are infallible.

Jonathan
