I've pondered this stuff for a while as I find myself working in a
bank yet being surrounded by people of the new counter culture.

At the G5 summit in London last year I was hassled by the police
whilst I went to work at the corporation I am employed by. I found it
a bitter irony indeed to see that the same mechanisms of evolution
that are evident in corporate culture were also in effect upon those
out "demonstrating" against the excesses of capitalism.

In corporate culture it appears to work in the following way.

1.) Trust that those higher up in the company will deal with any
ethical or moral issues raised in our day to day business.

2.) Promote those who show the least interest in ethical or moral
issues.

============================================

By the same token the march was taken over by brick toting idiots.
It's rather funny to see that those at the top of the food chain in
both situations are those with a total disregard for anything other
than their current pet interest.

In the middle of both organisations are the millions of people of the
world who do care, a bit, but don't really know what to do about it.

The post that sparked this one was where someone complained about the
stock market. In this structure the stock market is the virtual grim
reaper. It's simply a model of evolution. The company that fails to
achieve steps one and two above becomes road kill in the stock
market.

Yet if you try to build a structure to work against this ludicrous
situation it will enevitably be forced into the same mold. If you
achieve success you will attract those who see that you are missing
the people from step two and they will happily fill the gap.

- From the point of view of natural selection this would all be seen
as
being "quality".

I would suggest that the only way to actually break the back of this
fungus is to redefine quality and then to reward quality. Spend the
extra 10 cents to buy your produce from someone who produces a
reasonable product and is not a part of the funding structure of the
corporate animal. Forget Seattle coffee and buy you latte from the
couple with the small shop. Forget Sainsburies and buy your organic
produce from someone who cares about organic product.

Don't complain about a computer that doesn't work. Get your next
machine from someone who *cares* about computers. Pay the bit extra,
explain your needs and have a partner in getting the best out of the
new technology.

We built this new world we live in incrementally, by looking to save
1% on the cost of our toilet paper.

regards,
Ian
