Dear MOQers,
Well, I printed out Pirsig's article on "Subjects, Objects, Data &
Values" yesterday. It brings to mind Poincare in the following manner:
In ZMM, RP says, "When you live in the shadow of insanity, the appearance
of another mind that thinks and talks as yours does is something close to
a blessed event." (P.260) He then goes on to discuss Poincare.
Likewise, in linking the quality of physics to the quality in art,
Pirsig has not seen anything new or original. There are many book &
articles that take the same path. My favorite is: Leonard Shlain's "Art
& Physics: Parallel visions in space, time & light." His thesis is that
developments in art precede & give impetus to developments in physics.
The two branches of thought are after the same realization, but as in
Pirsig's paper, they each have different languages for conveying the
understanding; the underlying quality is the same. "As Shlain puts it,
"Art & physics also offer overlapping viewpoints of the same thing: some
call it nature; others call it reality."
There are worthy explanations of Einstein's science in the book, & a
painting by Rene Magritte on the book jacket. It was published in 1991.
My only complaint with the book is that all the beautiful paintings
reproduced within the books are in black & white. I
would have gladly paid more for color reproductions.

"When is a man in mere understanding? When he sees one thing seperate
from another.
When is a man above mere understanding? When a man sees all in all, thern
a man stands
beyond mere understanding."-Eckhardt
