Well, I do not believe that there is a *thing* called insanity. I
believe that there is a *state* which we commonly identify as
insanity. As Derrick suggested there are different declinations of
what insanity is.

If I throw myself off a roof (without material aid) greater than say
50 foot on this planet believing, against all the evidence of my life
prior to this, that I will "fly" down. I consider that to be within
the bounds of the state I call insanity.

There are many other actions/beliefs that I would consider to place
myself within these bounds. I should imagine that my bounds do not
tally with all that many people.
