Hello everyone
I used to be a regular contributor to the discussion group and many of
the older members may remember me as glove. I have always been a ardent
reader of the archives and last winter, at the urging of Bodvar, I put
together a book called Lila's Child; An Inquiry into Quality, which can
be viewed here:
http://members.tripod.com/~Glove_r/Childintro.htm
It chronicles the first six months of the discussion group and is a
marvelous source of information on Robert Pirsig, in my estimation.
During the work on the book I withdrew from the discussion group and
have been gone ever since. I would like to share a few thoughts about
the experience.
It was my first real effort at editing on such a grand scale and I made
many mistakes, but looking back, it seems each mistake was actually a
necessary step for the evolution of the book, not only physically but in
my "mind", for as the work progressed I found myself organizing the book
even in my dreams.
Many mornings I would leap from bed brimming with new visions of how the
narrative should be presented. I found I had the whole book in my "mind"
and I could shift sections around at will until I "saw" the best way to
present the work. I gained a real appreciation for how much effort a
book actually takes and I hope the work might help advance the academic
acceptance of Pirsig's writings on the Metaphysics of Quality.
The book is still not complete, though each time I go through it now
there are fewer and fewer changes to be made. I had hopes to publish the
book and still do, but there are other changes brewing in my life right
now that require my attention and so that will have to wait. I find the
book is no longer in my "mind" as the time just isn't there right now to
really get into it. Maybe this coming winter...
I've received decidedly mixed reviews on Lila's Child. Some discussion
group members enjoyed it as much as I, while others were less
enthusiastic. The work is receiving quite a lot of academic interest
however, not only here in the US but all over the world, especially in
Europe and the UK. All the contributors should be proud. Robert Pirsig's
MOQ is by no means dead.
I am also glad to see Roger has been busy on a new project and look
forward to reading it.
Best wishes,
Dan
