To David Lind:
Are you a real person, or do you just play one on TV, stage, etc.? :) My
first inclination was to dismiss your "take" on Brian's query regarding the
realm of emotions because you equated this with your stage work...and all the
world is really not a stage...it's a "pretend" land for the sake of
entertainment...I think we get confused on the issue of emotions because they
appear to well up from within, when in actuality, as Jung was one of the
first to clarify, emotions are a "response to an external stimulus." Sort of
a Copernican shift, in a manner of speaking. I felt certain that emotions
must reside in the realm of the intellectual, and when we "feel" we are
really internalizing objective thought. But David Lind's post reminded me
that I could conceive of multiple situations that would create instantaneous
anger in me, and my response mechanism would be quite similar to the response
one gets when sitting on a hot stove. I felt fairly certain that Jung and
Fromm (who taught me that the root of "passion" is "passive" and we need to
take a more "active" approach in our passions) had me on the right track in
taking control of my emotions...then one day a few years ago at work this new
employee showed up at my company - she was probably what one might deem
"moderately" attractive, a little bulkier than I like due to her Dutch
ancestry, kind of "au naturel" without all the big hair and gobs of makeup we
so love. She showed up at my work station where I was filing away some
things and merely introduced herself, and without having the time to make any
critical judgment as to her "value" to me, my knees turned to rubber and I
had to force out a few words so as not to look like a complete idiot.
Something told me "this is the ONE for you". After the first date I was
fairly certain we'd be together forever, but she dumped me after a couple of
months, or weeks. I found myself alone again, on my knees in my bedroom
wailing tears and cursing Jung.
