ROGER:
Could you give an example of destruction that is good? (Noting that if it
is good because of its property of clearing away for new, better
CONSTRUCTION or reconstruction, that I will suggest that it is the
subsequent construction that is essential to its goodness.)
ERIN: After reading the Tom Robbins quote (see below) a couple of months ago I
have been reading Tom Brezney's Free Will Astrology column. I usually read all
the signs because regardless of whether they are accurate or not they are
usually really amusing. (I know you mentioned in a previous email you liked
Tom Robbins so that is why I thought I'd mention that)
I had read your email and then had gone and read all the horoscopes for this
week on Free Will Astrology. Ira Sadoff and perhaps other Scorpio's with
erasers may want to object to your conclusion.
HOROSCOPE FOR SCORPIO
"I've spent the last few years with an eraser,/" writes Ira Sadoff in his poem
"Long Island," "trying to uncover the masterpiece under the canvas,/
scratching at the crusted-over surfaces." When I read this passage, I
immediately recognized it as an apt metaphor for the unappreciated work you've
been doing. Another way to describe your quest is to say you've been
struggling to stay on the right side of cosmic law as you've carried out an
extended act of creative destruction. I believe you're nearing the climax of
the process, Scorpio.
"The pencil is mightier than the pen"
Robert Pirsig
"I've seen the future of American literature and its name is Rob Brezsny."
--Tom Robbins
ERIN: Perhaps erasing is creative and valuable in and of itself. IF it is
than it is not ONLY the subsequent construction that is of value I am not
sure if I am prepared to make a clear argument but my instincts are saying
creative destruction is as much value as creative construction. If an eraser
could talk I think it might say "Less is more" and I guess we will all have to
decide whether an eraser makes a good editor or not. But I am guessing that
conclusion is too postmodern for a lot of y'all so I will be curious to hear
your arguments against it.
