Dear Marco,

I agree to be counted (8/2 21:47 +0100) on your side against
the 'rational intellectuals' because I suggested 'ethics'
(comparable with your 'human rights') as the morality by which
intellectual patterns of values try to control social patterns of
values. I'll defect you soon enough (on minor points, don't be
afraid).

I don't think ethics is only about duties and the other face of
the coin from (human) rights.
Ethics is much broader (than just rights or duties) according to
the FOLDOP definitions you provided 26/11 18:49 +0100:
'"morality" refers to the first-order beliefs and practices about
good and evil by means of which we guide our
behavior. Contrast with ethics, which is the second-order,
reflective, critical and normative consideration of our moral
beliefs and practices.
Ethics: branch of philosophy concerned with the evaluation of
human conduct.'

A statement that forces itself upon me is 'subjects have duties
and objects have rights'. 'Objects' includes non-human living
beings!
I don't agree that the intellectual level is only about HUMAN
rights because the jump from social to intellectual level is
only made by humans. The 'good' intellectual patterns of values
upheld against (falling back to) the social level is not only
'good for humans'. In order to be consistent (to the principle of
justice), human rights have to be applied -mutatis mutandis, e.g.
less consciousness and less 'ability to suffer'- to non-human
living beings also. Intellectual patterns of values (well, the
best at least) also uphold duties of humans toward other living
beings and other principles for evaluating human conduct
vis-à-vis the rest of (DQ's) Creation.

For the rest I find nothing to quibble about in your 8/2 21:47
+0100 post.

With friendly greetings,

Wim
