Hey Squonk and erin,
Myths are precisely what the social level does. Not only money, but
language, legitimacy and science are all myths we cling to, without which
our worlds would collapse (hence cataneda's "stopping the world"). If we
stopped believing these words meant something real (or that my money did),
then society would change fundementally. Vonnegut's book galapagos is a
good exploration of what this is like: in it alot of people lose their faith
in money, so grain sits in storehouses while people starve and world war
breaks out over lack of distribution, then people have to evolve to get past
it, but they evolve back to biology, not forward in intellect, old
pessimist.
The power a policemans badge has, as well as the power of dollar bills and
bitter words, is derived from our own overwhelming belief in them. Not
entirely different from Clinging to notions of God who put us in the middle
of the marble called the universe.
