I moved in the opposite direction, having read ZMM and Carlos Casteneda
during my teens/early 20's, and becoming a Christian later in my 20's.

First, Ellen White would probably better be characterized as the founder
of the SDA church, rather than its most prominent thinker (Uriah Smith may
well have been the latter). You probably know that we consider Ellen
White a prophetess, and I am absolutely convinced of this based on visions
she had of New York City, and towers being destroyed, and helpless
firemen.
My book containing this prophecy is at work, I'd be happy to provide
direct quotes if you'd be interested. And I'm sorry if you and your
family had a less than positive experience in the church.
George
