JOHN:
Your postscript betrays your bias. You say "your view is that America has no
recognition of higher values." I didn't say that. I don't believe that. I
did say, as a gross generalisation, I acknowledge, but one I see as valid,
that "American culture tends to equate quality with 'success', narrowly
defined, and to the almost total exclusion of 'being' as a source of our
highest values." That is certainly the message of Hollywood, which is not
immaterial to the way America is viewed in the rest of the world. But of
course there are many Americans who do not fall into that category.
ROG:
Seems like I was pretty close to the mark based upon your own words and
clarification. Would a less biased summary of your position be that
"American culture almost totally excludes higher value?" And are you saying
you got this from Hollywood?
Maybe you have absolutely no true argument behind this statement and it is
you whose prose "betrays" his bias. And maybe not...
Perhaps the US's excellence in almost every intellectual, technological,
political and social realm just has "the rest of the world" envious. If so,
it is natural that they build arguments of our inferiority based upon such
decisive inadequacies as our reputation of being "low on the BEING meter."
Ouch that hurts.
Or maybe not...
