Hi matt,
matt:Though I never followed the thread that
>elicited the 'differential' v. 'centric' splicing of mysticism, I fail to
>see how I or Rorty could fall into the abyss of "one truth that will lead

>than anything else, so I apologize, if that is so.
erin:I don't think i explained myself clearly. Let me try again.
I don't think Pirsig would lock the MoQ into the centric mysticism either.
Although with this unitary concept quality, I think you have to
be very careful not to start kneeling at the alter of Quality.
To me it is very good to explore other concepts like
evolution, imagination, creativity, art, etc to prevent that.
I don't think I would stick you or Rorty in the category of
differential mystic either. But when you described things such as
the centerless web I could see there being a danger at
kneeling at the alter of no center (don't know if that makes sense).
I think exploring Rorty here while exploring Quality would help
prevent anyone becoming a priest or priestess. I don't think
either Pirsig and Rorty lock into one type of mysticism themselves but
while exploring them I was just saying that it seemed better
to focus on both types rather then just one.
matt:that's why I made the analogy of this forum to a
>religion: because we idolize Pirsig. The extent to which we idolize Pirsig
>differs.

Yes I think Pirsig wouldn't want us to do that and I don't intend to
do it but probably do it from time to time. MOQ works better for me then any
other framework and setting up Quality as a center probably
unintentionally sets up Pirsig there too.
I just want to comment on one more thing.
You said "The extent to which I've "fallen" is the extent to which I'm making
room for other idols, which everyone is entitled to do. Rorty's "method" of
recontextualization, in fact, is built on the structure of a narrative"
I can interpret this two ways, one I agree with and one I don't.
I think the way I first interpreted you because you were leaving as a fallen
priest was that you were valuing a centerless framework more then the centered
framework. Thus this adding Rorty as a idol was really just accepting Rorty's
centerless framework. But the interpretation I do agree with is that of
valuing both a centered framework and a centerless framework (it just seems
Rorty is better at exploring one and Pirsig is better at exploring
another even though I know you can't pigeonhole them into either.
