Hi Sam, Erin, Platt and Matt and all
I agree with Sam on his take on truth. Truth is
not "infinitely malleable" nor is it based ultimately
upon social power. I also agree that truth is
not "absolute."
I agree with Pirsig's take on the issue in chapter 8:
"... one doesn't seek the absolute "Truth." One seeks
instead the highest quality intellectual explanation of
things with knowledge that ... this explanation must be
taken provisionally..."
Another philosopher with this *highest quality theory
until a better one comes along* view of truth is John
Dewey. Personally, I think Dewey's version of
pragmatism is superior overall to anything presented by
Pirsig or Rorty though. However, I only have third-hand
awareness of Rorty. I find no value in that branch of
philosophy, and have chosen to aim my studies
elsewhere. (In other words, I am aware I have nothing
of value to add to the Rorty discussion.)
Paco
PS -- I found Fernandez-Armesto's take on truth as
hopelessly entangled in unstated assumptions of
transcendental, Platonic realms of higher and absolute
reality.
