Hi Gang,
I've been moved by some really great posts in the last 2h hours,
especially the contributions of Donny and Diana.
DONNY:
> Quality/care is the means to a state of at-one-ment. It puts you
>"in synch" w/ things -- "in the groove."
>...
DIANA:
>On communism and capitalism.
>There is room for Dynamic quality in both systems if they are practised
>with care.
>...
I feel that these brief quotes hardly do justice, so recommend
re-reading of both posts Donny and Diana gave us.
CARE really is the key word here. I heard about a study where an
improvement in factory lighting led to an improvement in productivity.
Later, the management explained how they were having the lighting
optimised to maximise worker comfort, dropped the light back to the
original level, and got a further increase in productivity. It seems
that the actual lighting level was not relevant, but convinced that the
managers cared, the workers also started to care more. (I'm not sure of
the source for this story).
The alienation of modern life is all about lack of care.
Hardly anyone cares about caring.
Worker motivation is reduced to an issue of profit and reward
(capitalism), or disappears altogether (Soviet communism).
At first Donny's "at-one-ment" seemed to me a bit contrived. Us Jews are
very familiar with the concept, and even have a special day set aside -
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (don't ask me about the rest of the
year!). The funny thing is that the root of the word "Kippur" also
appears in the Hebrew words for pitch and tar (KoFeR), e.g. when Noah
smeared pitch on his ark to make it watertight. This smearing/sealing
seems to have a good deal to do with "at-one-ment". The other use of
this Hebrew root is in the word for a village - KFaR (kafr in Arabic).
Sometimes these common roots are significant, sometimes not. To put it
in a more Pirsigian perspective, maybe these coincidences are
significant if we CARE about them.
Thanks Diana and Donny for clarifying the real nature of the Lila Squad
- a union of people who care.
