hi, fintan:
i love your idea of meeting at the virtual irish pub. let's make a date.
in regards to the Jaynes book on consciousness, you ask:
So how is awareness defined there?
lithien:
fintan, this book is so original and far out that its a pleasure to read.
the main premise is that mankind developed consciousness much later than we
usually think. it defines consciousness differently and alludes to "voices"
which were heard by early man when language started being used. this is the
reasoning behind it: that just like we hear other people's voices out loud,
early man heard his thoughts in his head because he was learning to
formulate words and phrases to make himself understood. therefore, he
mistook these "voices" for gods. when man started becoming conscious, the
voices left him and he started looking for the gods outside himself wanting
to hear them again. once in a while, there would be someone who heard the
voices and these people became prophets and important religious figures.
there is much more to it than what im explaining here but its a very
interesting concept.
love,
Lithien
