hello everyone
during my reading and pondering, i have been consistently struck by the fact
that cultural value, or the social level of the Metaphysics of Quality,
seems to be the highest value we conceive of. our entire realities consist
of social level values created by our interaction with our environment. in
order to further understand this discrepency with the Metaphysics of Quality
i feel Force of Value must be taken into consideration. this is my on-going
attempt. please bear with any mistakes or omissions.
INORGANIC- we are unable to conceptualize what occurs here as far as force
of value is concerned. atoms are not controlled by the same forces of value,
according to Pirsig,
as the next three levels are.
Pirsig writes: (from Roger Parkers email)
<<" Biological and social and intellectual patterns are not the possession
of
substance. The laws that create and destroy these patterns are not the laws
of electrons and protons.......THE FORCES THAT CREATE AND DESTROY THESE
PATTERNS ARE THE FORCES OF VALUE">>
therefore, i leave the explanations of what is occurring at this level to
the quantum guys and simply assume "something" is happening there.
BIOLOGICAL- both creative and discreative forces of value seem to be at work
in the biological
static patterns of value. this is what we call evolution. natural selection
is a consequence of the underlying forces of value in the biological level.
from this level grows the social patterns of value creating high value
situations for the individual.
SOCIAL- creditive/creative forces of value direct all static social patterns
of value,
such as logic, rules of social interaction, academic learning, the notion of
Time, linear movement, and movement in general. the social level also
evolves and is directed by underlying creative forces of value. from this
level grows the intellect level patterns of value, seemingly opposed yet
working in a synergistic way.
INTELLECT- dis-creative forces of value direct all static intellect patterns
of value. truly new and creative ideas arise individually and if they
contain value, permeate the social level thru interaction between
individuals in some fashion,
and give rise to new static social patterns of
value when the old ones are discredited-discreated by the underlying force
of value
contained in the static intellect patterns of value. every Good idea is a
contradiction of an existing social idea. the intellect functions in
non-Time and is not bound by the creative linear forces of the social level,
but the discreative forces of value. the intellect generalizes the Quality
Event by perceiving before it occurs.
SUMMARY:
these Forces of Value are Dynamic in nature and we are only aware of them by
their passing and leaving static quality patterns of value in their wake, so
to speak. they are part of our own awareness even though we are not aware of
them. without the higher value patterns of intellect driven by discreative
forces of value, the creative forces of value in the social level would
result in stasis, stagnation and eventually extinction.
the dance of li-la
is the highest value situation in the universe from our static quality point
of view. the intellect level is the
highest moral level by virture of its Dynamic drive to discreate the created
and allow new creations to arise in their place.
