Hi Hugo
Happy New Year and I'm glad to see you're still alive. Re the new LS,
all the new rules are tentative. I think you understand and appreciate
why I want to encourage everyone to post regularly. I have never been on
a mailing list where that was enforced and you have so I'll have to bow
to your experience, however I still think there is so much to gain from
such a rule that I want to try it out anyway. The LS will not be the
only Pirsig group anymore so it's not as if we are prohibiting people
from taking part at all. I realize that about 10% participation rate is
normal but I don't believe that only 10% of subscribers subscribe with
the intention of being a lurker, they might even appreciate being given
a bit of a push to join in. But like I said, it's tentative, if it
doesn't work we can stop it.
As for the programs limiting valuable contributions, well of course they
will but that's the price we pay for limiting the spam. I think we have
to be realistic about what's possible on this medium. If there are too
many mails you can't read them all. If the threads jump incomprehensibly
from one thing to the next the only people who can keep up are those who
are too vacant to notice and those who shanghai every thread to promote
their own pet theory. There's no real dialog there at all. The programs
are a limiting factor but not half as limiting a factor as spam is. In
spite of the fact that I've been trying to get them going for months
it's never really happened so actually nobody knows what would happen if
we did stick to one.
If they don't work, fine, we'll try something else. Dialog is the
objective, the methods of achieving that can change.
