Hi Roger and LS:
I completely agree with your post of Jan. 8.
Lately I’ve noticed a drift in the conversation away from the MoQ back to
the static assumptions of scientific materialism.
Since most of us have been brainwashed into believing the scientific
explanation of things, we're naturally reluctant to substitute a world
consisting of mass (electrons, protons, neutrons) and energy (gravity,
electromagnetic, weak) for a world consisting of “moral orders" and a
"free force of life."
Thus we see all manner of changes being proposed to the MoQ in order
to bring it more in line with the scientific worldview, even going so far as
to eliminating the intellectual level and reintroducing the mind-matter
bugaboo.
Recognizing the limits of science and shaking loose from its robotic grip
on intellect is terribly difficult. Thankfully you've reminded us of the
greater understanding we gain by leaping over the barren abyss of
scientific materialism to Pirsig's world of values.
Maybe Pirsig is wrong and the scientists right. But until the science-
minded can come up with a good explanation of values, I, like you, am
sticking with the MoQ.
