Lithien,
You write:
lithien:
Jung said that human consciousness affects the collective unconscious which
i equate with Dynamic Quality. what do you think? am i far off in this
supposition?
Clark writes:
I tried to read the philosophers 40 or 50 years ago but they never seemed
to stick with me so I gave up. I am reduced to assimilating information and
constructing my own view of my place in the universe so be warned.
As to your question above, I certainly do think that individual
consciousnesses (?) do affect the collective unconsciousness. As I view DQ
all of our influences, including our consciousness as well as the
collective unconsciousness, affects our immediate, ongoing world view. I
think that this is the way that DQ works. this is then translated into SQ
which represents the immediate position of our conscious world view. It is
in this way that Pirsig's "Many Truths" idea operates to bring our
individual world views into closer agreement, and if I interpret him
correctly, will eventually cause our world views to become very close, or
even identical. From the vantage point of 74 years this appears to me to be
happening with great rapidity. Still a long way to go but the world seems
to me to be a much more moral place than it was when I began to wonder
about such things. When I use the term "moral" I do not mean conformity to
any religious outlook. I intend morality to mean conformity to the overall
operation of Dynamic Qulaity in the universe.
lithien:
i wonder if Quality can be divided as you have done. is this a split of
Dynamic Quality? or are you saying that each static level produces its own
version of quality affected by the kind of level it arises from? could you
further elaborate on this and clarify these points.
Clark writes:
In a sense Dynamic Quality cannot be divided. It is the force that
directs the evolution of the universe. Also our evolution since we are just
a part of universal evolution.
On the other hand there are as many expressions of DQ as there are people
in the universe as well as the universal DQ. It is the interaction of all
of these inputs that tend to drive our individual conceptions of DQ
ultimately toward a common point of agreement. This is what Pirsig's "Many
Truths" idea is about.
I view DQ as the function that operates to try all possible combinations
of possibilities that exist in the universe. These possibilities increase
in number the more complex the universe gets and thus the universe,
including humanity and our world, becomes so complex that we have no hope
of being able to piece together in detail the story of the unfolding of
universal evolution. Thus arises the mystical outlook. It is the result of
complexity.
lithien's question:
isnt inorganic quality the same thing as static quality? im a little
confused here by the new terms you are using. please clarify
Clark writes:
By inorganic Quality I mean the operation of all of Dynamic Quality
except that DQ which falls within the confines of sentience (read
humanity). It is a bad choice of words because it includes all of the
non-sentient biological level. I also use universal Quality to mean the
same thing but this is not correct since universal Quality includes both
inorganic Quality and sentient Quality.
Static Quality results from the unconscious selection of elements of our
ongoing field of awareness by Dynamic Quality which then becomes SQ of
which we are cognizant. Dynamic Quality is the force that tries all of the
ongoing possibilities that exist in the universe. Sentient DQ differs from
universal DQ in that sentient DQ applies only to humanity and is influenced
by our consciousness. Both the same DQ with different functions.
lithien:
would immediate influences encompass temperament? if so, are we influenced
by our genetic inheritance and are not as free as we think in pursuing
these
individual truths?
Clark writes:
Everything that has any influence on us in any manner whatsoever has an
influence on what our Dynamic Quality selects from our fields of awareness.
This would certainly include temperament and genetic inheritance. It seems
to me that our intellect is what hangs out there and interacts with the
rest of humanity and this is the part that will eventually operate to draw
humanity toward a common view.
Think about Pirsig's "Many Truths" idea. I think that it has not been
given enough attention in our deliberations. Ken Clark
