As I understand it, 2001, the screenplay, written by Clarke and Kubrick,
was based on a Clarke short story and 2001, the novel, was written at
the same time and is different in some respects. I read 2001 before I
saw it at the theater in '68 or '69 (I think it was around the
holidays). I was a Clarke fan in my youth.
Read "Fahrenheit 451" or "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (both by Ray
Bradbury) and then rent the videos. You'll see my point, I think.
