It's actually a 'Misperception". More specifically, many of our
"awarenesses" are the product of sensory input from a diverse range
of
sources - in this case the movement of a car triggers input from at
least three senses - vision, equilibrium (or an inertial response), and
proprioception (body awareness). The confusion caused in the above
scenario is due to sensory input which has been "catalogued" as
belonging to a certain awareness (the movement of a car) even though it
lacks the supporting (and verifying) data. hence most people in this
siutation will have the flexor muscles of their legs and abdomen
contract in order to maintain balance (even when there is no movement).

Which brings us to "Cultural Immunity" - as human beings our intellects
are always leaping to a comclusion about perception of an event, even
without the supporting evidence. The case above is one example, and all
manner of visual illusions rely upon or exploit it (eg: all movies,
particularly special effects ones). RP examined it from an intellectual
(or "conceptive") perspective (the famous "chart" story) but it exists
at deeper levels (ie: at a "perceptive" level.). The phenomenon of
"Suggestion" (the inducement of sensory awareness via verbal or other
cues) also exploits this fallibility of the senses.

As an end note, the "well catalogued 6th sense of empathy" (frequently
referred to as a "morphic field") is not particularly accepted by any
branch of academia (medical or otherwise). Medicine rejects it because
there is no associated neurophysiological response that can be detected
to accompany it, and psychology (with its increasing tendency to argue
along anato-physiological lines for things) finds itself ill-equipped to
defend the research. I find Morphic fields very interesting, they extend
not only to "emotional" awareness, but also to "intellectual"
awareness... I won't go into a lengthy discussion, but it has been
argued that this related to how several people will independently make
the same discovery (eg: calculus, superconductors) at the same time.

Arrgghh, take me back to Lurkville.
