Dear Erin,
You asked 11 Dec 2002 10:53:31 -0500 what Pirsig meant when he wrote in
chapter 30 of 'Lila':
'when you're on the receiving end of some karma dump like that it sets you
free'.
Maybe something like 'nothing left to lose', as Rick suggested 11 Dec 2002
13:59:51 -0500.
More probably he identified 'not passing on karmic garbage' (violence, hate,
blame etc.), which dissolves a static pattern of value, with 'receiving
karmic garbage'. I don't agree with him. Being a victim usually doesn't make
a Gandhi of people.
You also asked:
'Could you expand on the difference of killing a static pattern and helping
the static pattern migrate towards DQ.
Or in context of Rudy's question-- difference in killing a SOM pattern and
helping an SOM migrate.'
For me there is no real difference. Both 'killing' and 'migrating' are
metaphors. 'Killing' just had the wrong connotations for me as a pacifist.
It makes it more difficult to recognize our own participation in the
patterns we want to change.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
