Hi Chin,
Yeah, I'm still a little confused about your position. Most of your
description of how we move foward I agree with (sans the "naturally expect
[our children's philosophy] to be better then our own"), except every time
you use the predicate "innate." I guess our difference could be described
in that I would deny "innate" knowledge or understanding, insofar as if you
dropped that word from your description, I think it would be pretty good.
Because outside of growing up in an educational tradition, I'm not sure how
understanding would be "built up from previoues fathers and mothers...." I
don't see education as "holding back" our children, but rather making sure
they understand what we've built up so far so that we may "encourage them to
carry on." That's why I agree with Sellars' "...if not empty or blind, is
at least dumb."
And I'm pretty sure Pirsig would agree with me (his description of the
cultural mythos as "analogues built upon analogues upon analogues" in ZMM,
which tranfers to social/intellectual static patterns in Lila).
