rather I think value is a given, something
has to have value if we are even to notice its

Case and David ... and everyone,

      David:
'Value quantifies quality' you seem to say, something in it, but somethings

        can
have very high value or equal value but have very different qualities.

        [Case]
Or at least helps to establish relationships among competeing aspects of
Quality. Give me and example of "somethings can
have very high value or equal value but have very different qualities."

      Rebecca:
Here's a thought: You need three things to determine value. You have the two things that you're comparing as well as the context you're comparing them in. Context is the key. The underlying assumption here is that no two things can be exactly equal in each and every context - that would make them one thing. If there is any ponit of comparison then the two things are discrete.

I wouldn't necessarily say "value quantifies quality' but rather "Value is the comparison of static patterns within a given context" or "Value is the comparison of a static pattern in relation to DQ... the comparison to itself at two different points in time within a context"

Perhaps this is the way in which value creates reality (Lila ch 11, p164). The way in which DQ is the source of all things...

        [David M]

Also, how does DQ relate to SQ.

        [Case]
They are both aspects of Quality.

      Rebecca:
They are the opposing aspects of Quality. What would you say to the proposition that DQ is continuous and SQ is discrete? I think this conception is useful. Within Aritotlean Metaphysics, Quality has two parts - discrete and continuous. I've also been reading a little Georges Bataille lately and he has a lot to say about these two states of being ... and his work seems to me to be a western conception of Eastern Mysticism, which makes another little connection there.

      Phew! Comments?
