    I predict Scott will reply that contingent means "dependent on other
    things." or history. Connected to previous experience.

    1) happening by chance or accident; fortuitous,
    --these are terms that speak to our limited knowledge, nothing would be by
    chance if everything were known, but things would still be contingent.

    2) true only under certain conditions; not necessarily or universally
    --except that the "certain conditions" are the way things are, and therefore
    things are contingent universally and necessarily.

    3) some other definition?
    --yes, contingent would mean dependent on history
