Jaap (mainly) Tor and Gene and MF.
Interesting input about the writer Harry Mulisch's "De composite
van de wereld" (looks like "The Composition of the World") who
says that art is a phenomenon between the rational and the
irrational or between science and religion.
When you (Jaap) write: "When you state that art is subjective and
technology is objective...." etc. it isn't directly compatible with
Mulisch above. His 'rational' corresponds more to the objective and
'irrational' to the subjective, but - OK - he knows nothing about the
MOQ, and you are right when you go on to say that as the S/O
distinction is invalid and that it makes art a bridge between myth
and metaphysics.
Your assertion that myth corresponds to third level thinking and
metaphysics to fourth level thinking I also buy (hesitatingly
because dividing thinking from "the level" is a bit somish). Myth
(religion) is the major social pattern and metaphysics (in the
classical "science" sense) is the chief intellectual pattern, and if art
is the bridge between the two, then - before the intellect -
art was the dynamic "irritant" that caused the intellectual level.
Up to this point our views correspond IMO, but I went on to say
said that art in this moqish sense is much "wider" than the
contemporary "fine arts". It was not cave paintings or ritual dance
that spawned the intellectual level, on the contrary, those
(paintings & dance) were the "technology" of invoking the forces or
bringing the game animal into their pits.
No, the real shocking - unheard of - "creativity" of stone age was
the one of DIVIDING WHAT'S OBJECTIVE FROM WHAT'S
SUBJECTIVE and it only succeeded with the early Greek
philosophy.
Art may be said to still bridge the (dynamic) rift between society
and intellect, yes, to take it all out it bridges all levels and is less
and less like what Tor called "Liberal Arts" the further back
we go. And what's more: a completely new art has started
a subversive activity in intellect. Something that some
time will become a new level ....in my opinion.
>From Tor and Gene's posts on friday it looks like some agreement
is about to sediment close to this (except for the new level idea!!). I
liked Tor's remark about programming more creative than painting still lifes
"by the book" although only the latter is considered as art.
However, painting landscapes from "Nortdland" is pure art any
way!!!

Thanks for now.
