I think there are many interesting things about american culture, and as
Pirsig showsindians are an important part of it. You should ask yourself:
why is it that european culture almost completely follows the american
culture. Why is it that ""the american way"" apeals so greatly to european
youth. I think this has everything to do with freedom and indian values. The
point is about this kind of freedom that it is very hard to expres it in
(dialectical) words; you need poetry or the like for this. Maybe the answer
lays in youth-culture, at all times it is youth that wants to break free
from anything. With a Freudian approach you could say that the faillure of
breaking free is the trauma that creates a society of proper order, a
society afraid of freedom. Talking of freedom in the MOQ sense of DQ, as I
said before, I think this to be mystical. But I doubt it to be possible to
express this in "normal" languages; you understand it or not, but you can
not discuss this understanding.
I wrote some about this subject for a small group of friends. Unfortunatly I
don't have always time to translate it in order to send it to you all.
According to the subject I just discoverred Thoreau. ( You may think me to
be a barbarian for not knowing him, but he's no part of the dutch
school-program. I came along his name by the film "death poets society".) I
think he could be a source for better understanding ""the american way"" and
thus freedom and indian values.
An other question is what do you regard as freedom. As for example Marcuse
says, freedom can also be a kind of proper order; a kind of proper order in
which you are free.
greetings,
Jaap
