Hi fellow MOQers,
First, a comment on the solipsism discussion...
MARCO:
[Roger's] latest words " patterns of REALITY [...] are simplified, sliced
and diced subjective and objective intellectual divisions of the
undifferentiated seamless continuum", seems to deny that any static
patterns of reality are there outside.
JONATHAN:
That's the point Marco. The static patterns aren't "there outside" as
static patterns.
MARCO:
That's the point, Jonathan. You fall in the solipsistic trap.
JONATHAN:
Marco, I think that you are misunderstanding what I wrote. A "static
pattern" is a representation (map). What is outside is the "thing" itself
as part of Roger's "undifferentiated seamless continuum".
ME:
I think that when we talk about static patterns we need to specify whether
they be intellectual, social, biological, or inorganic. This would help
prevent misunderstandings. In Roger's now famous words that "patterns of
reality [...] are simplified, sliced and diced..." etc., he was of course
referring to intellectual patterns which represent other types of patterns
of reality which are 'out there' before we 'slice and dice' 'em with our
INTELLIGENT (sic) scalpel.
--------------------------------
I am beginning to see how the distinction between intelligence and
intellect is central to our understanding of the MOQ's intellectual level.
Only homo sapiens have intellect, as far as I know, but other biological
organisms do have intelligence.
INTELLIGENCE is the ability to structure dynamic reality into static
patterns of value. By this definition, intelligence is not exclusive to
homo sapiens. When a puppy first experiences its master's presence this is
a Quality event, and in order for the puppy eventually to recognize the
master, it must structure this dynamic value as a static pattern of value
within an existing neural framework. This is where Piaget's schemata
theory comes into play- dynamic quality (or 'new stimulus' in Piagetian
terms) latches onto (or 'is assimilated or accommodated into'- Piaget)
existing static patterns (or 'schemata'-Piaget) The dog must have some
existing neural system that structures reality into static patterns. I
would think that, in the absence of an arbitrary system of symbolic
representation (language), a dog must depend on its sensory perception
(especially smell) for cognizing reality. The fundamental difference
between a dog's static patterns of Dynamic reality (schemata) and that of
homo sapiens, may be in the nature of the pattern. I suspect that a dog's
schemata (if indeed it has one) will be built upon FUZZY patterns of value
which have an INTRINSIC association with reality- images, smells, sounds
(reality once removed). Homo sapiens' schemata is built upon DISCRETE
patterns of value which have primarily an ARBITRARY association with
reality- words (reality as twice removed).
INTELLECT is a biological organism's potential for structuring static
patterns of value (which represent dynamic reality) into more complex,
interconnected static patterns. It is the characteristic discreteness of
these static patterns which enables interconnection: by assigning
reproducible units of sound to represent real world essences, it is then
possible to combine these units into more complex (reproducible) patterns.
Intellect is driven by language- the evolution of language is the
evolution of intellect.

Thanks for reading,
Mark
