Marco and Moffers,
Marco, You state one of my favourite passages from Lila.
> "Actually, these last two piles, junk and tough, were the piles that
> gave him the most concern. The whole thrust of the organizing effort
> was to have as few of these as possible. When they appeared HE HAD TO
> FIGHT THE TENDENCY TO SLIGHT THEM, SHOVE THEM UNDER THE CARPET, THROW
> THEM OUT OF THE WINDOW, BELITTLE THEM, AND FORGET THEM. These were the
> underdogs, the outsiders, the pariahs, the sinners of his system. But
> the reason he was so concerned about them was that HE FELT THE QUALITY
> AND STRENGTH OF HIS ENTIRE SYSTEM OF ORGANIZATION DEPENDED ON HOW HE
> TREATED THEM. IF HE TREATED THE PARIAHS WELL HE WOULD HAVE A GOOD
> SYSTEM. IF HE TREATED THEM BADLY HE WOULD HAVE A WEAK ONE. They could
> not be allowed to destroy all efforts at organization but he couldn't
> allow himself to forget them either. They just stood there, accusing,
> and HE HAD TO LISTEN". (Lila chapter 2, Marcos emphasis).
It is one of my favourites because Mr. Pirsig HAD to listen, which goes
along with another statement of P. where he says that to assimilate karma ,
to take bad feelings, spiritual trash and not turn it on to others is the
most moral thing one can do. This turns the discussion towards individuals,
and this is the mystics answer, giving the direction for a better society by
making everyman/everywoman listen to an inner voice. If one wishes to turn
this into an personal directive the quote from the bible can be taken.
" Was Du nicht willst was mann dir tu, das fg auch keinem anderen zu. "
(This is me translating :) )
" Do not do to others, what You do not wish to be done to Yourself."
This directive inherits a concept for DQ (at least in the beginning, before
a possible confrontation). One might as well say. Do what you wish to
do,(establish your own static patterns via your personal connection to DQ)
but be aware of the fact that others have the same rights in the moment you
perform the action, even if you suffer from the results.
Note that it does NOT say: " Do to others what You wish to be done to
Yourself."
Also note that You are the undertaker - Every moment You are at the
beginning of a chain of events. On another day You might be a little further
down the ladder and then You must not yell.
So even if one is the worst possible person but sticks to this rule (and
survives) , she will find out one day that there was enough suffering
arround.
This is simpel and I like it - still playing with this one quote.
But we live in the 21th century and our planet is in a terrible state. Above
is one bracket for my lifes plan and now I could dream of the other one ?
When it comes to polluting water, soil, air - the destruction of the
rainforests - killing of whales and dolphins - etc. . then it is time to
reach for my revolver.
Yes I would be a tyrant forcing companies and individuals to stop making
money from this or even better make them pay so much that there won't be any
profit left.
I will be back,
Andreas
P.S. Sorry, Bo but I cannot reply in a courteous manner - but soon I will be
there - lack of time.
