My initial thought on this ages old question (well, its at least as old as
Hume) is very short and simple:
In the MoQ, there are no Facts, only Values. Therefore, there are no "is's",
only "oughts".
That's it, end of story.
Science works very well with "Facts" from the Inorganic and Biological areas,
facts being only a convenient way to say "static patterns of value". The
problem of science is that they confuse their "Facts" with more than Biological
and Inorganic patterns. The problem has been trying to move into the social
realm (let alone the Intellectual) with this concept of Fact. A Fact "is some
way" rather than an "ought to be patterned some way". With their definition of
Fact we get stereotyping of all kinds in the social realm, like racial
profiling which leads to "blacks are criminals" (a particular problem in the
US).
