Hi All
Hopefully this message will get through this time - 3rd time lucky.
Thanks to all involved for discontinuing the 'MOQ As A Moral Guide' thread - I didn't mean for
you to stop altogether, just move it over to MD. Could we also keep this list clear of other
threads which aren't directly relevant to the future of the list.
WIKI
This looks very interesting and could well be one way forward for discussing MOQ and whilst
providing some static latching. I've had a quick poke around at some of the sites and gotten
basic information but I shall do some more detailed enquiry as and when. I'm not sure if it can
be run from 'our' server or what the security issues are. I'm fairly sure that I saw some
downloadable source code for it which I'll try and find. If it's open source and operates under
the GPL or something similar then we may be in luck. If it's proprietary code or M$ only then I
won't touch it or have it on the server but I don't think thi is the case! I still have a number
of questions that need answering so I'll try and find those answers ASAP.
CRIT
This also looks extremely interesting and, in some ways, would probably do a better job than
WIKI. Or maybe I should say a different job as it isn't entirely fair to compare them and make
a judgement until I have better knowledge of both. It looks like there may be more potential for
installing this system and the code seems to be available for this.
There seem to be a majority here that see MD as providing more posts than are required and wish
to contribute to a list with a less hectic throughput. For this reason I would have thought that
reason that some of the original rules of the MF list are very relevant - especially the one a
day post. Additionally there should be no more than one subject being discussed at any one time.
This would seem to be the best way to reduce throughput. I am sceptical about the prospect of
self-moderation but that may be because I'm overly cynical about these sort of things. I think
Jonathans idea about all posts coming through in one hit is eminently sensible -
the only drawback here is that in order to do this the list needs to be moderated and that
requires a moderator. As a (definitely friendly) aside to Jonathan, I'm at a loss as to the
logic of your comments about the MF/Lilasquad list being a failure. It started in Feb 99 and
only really started to tail off around August of this year. That makes two and a half
uninterrupted years of monthly discussions which a great many persons contributed to and
enjoyed. The only thing we didn't get out of it was the latching but the structure of the
discussions was such that that could still be achieved if anyone wished to volunteer.
I think David's summary/suggestion (hi David, welcome back, good to hear from you again) is
about right from a mailing list point of view and think this should be explored further. I would
also like to move the focussed discussion back to the Lilasquad list and use the MF list for
summaries/latching once discussion is done.
That's all for now folks I'll probably post again tomorrow with a few more ideas but don't be
shy about responding.
One final point, I'm starting to get the Web site sussed and under control so if you find any
broken links or other problems let me know (preferably privately) and I'll get them fixed.
See ya
