Hello Sam,
There is textual support for option b in Lila but none for option a as far
as i can detect:

If they (sq pattern levels) all operate at the same time and in ways that
are almost independent of each other then there must be states when they
operate in ways that are not independent. Such states lie on a spectrum
between chaos and coherence it seems to me.
