Diana,
I hesitate to step into this because I am still not sure that I have a
good handle on the whole Pirsig framework but:
We, each individual, is doing the valueing. Remember undefined Quality
from ZMM. Pirsig demonstrated that everybody knows what Quality is even
though it can't be defined. The Quality for each individual results from
that individuals current intellectual state as modified by the Quality
event. This is supposed to be a force for good because Quality tends to
select the good. There is no independent value or valuer out there. The
drift toward value is a result of each individual's conception of value as
modified by the Quality event. That is why it is important for each
individual to prepare his mind to be most receptive to Quality. It will
still take a long time but the trend is toward the good. Otherwise we will
have to bring in a God. Ken Clark
