I know that no definition can express Quality very well. But if the concept is
to be useful, I thought that a description should add something to the concept
of existence (rather than having a one-to-one mapping with an already known
idea). The idea of teleology is just one suggestion. In particular the idea of
progressing from one level to the next, and calling the next a "higher" level
suggest goal-oriented behaviour. I do not mean that "Quality" and "existence"
are exclusive concepts by any means, but that existence has different aspects,
and that it is *infused* with Quality. Admittedly, if one divides Quality
according.to the classic-romantic division, then the classic dimension can be
identified with causation.
I wonder what other people think about this.
James.
