Dear Hugo and squad
Let's go over it once more. In Dynamic Quality the past, the present and
the future are all merged into one and there is no such thing as time.
In static quality time exists and it is usually perceived as a line, the
present is "now", the past is what we remember and the future is what we
expect. I'm sorry if this isn't consistent with your viewpoint, but can
I at least ask you to concede that this is what the MoQ says. In chp 9
Pirsig says that "before" and "after" are static terms and in a letter
to Anthony, he said that time is a static pattern. Past, present and
future exist alright, but only in static quality.
(I'd rather not get into a lengthy discussion about it at the moment but
evolution is a static concept as well)

My description of this aspect of DQ is
"Dynamic Quality is pure unfiltered experience; static quality is stable
distinguishable experience"
I was rather hoping someone would come along and improve on it, but I
guess I'll have to do that myself. One of the ways in which static
quality is filtered is that Quality is viewed through a linear time
channel. In Dynamic Quality that filter is thrown away.
Perhaps it would be more concise to say
"Dynami Quality is pure experience; static quality is filtered
experience."
These are Pirsigian terms as well.
If you want to persist with an idea of collapsing potentiality that's up
to you. I'm not sure that it makes a great deal of difference to the big
picture. To investigate that thoroughly would require a great deal of
time and energy. At the moment I'm focussed on drawing an outline of the
MoQ. If I can make a satisfactory outline then I'll go back and fill in
the details.
