Hi Squad,
The Objectivity Trap
****************
THEO - Quality MUST be prior to recognition. [snip]...
Quality and value existed billions of years before any
intelligent observer
BO - Dynamic Value - as such - is the unending source and can hardly be
dependant upon anything else.
IMHO this independent (D)Q of Theo and Bo is one of the horns of
Pirsig's dilemma in ZAMM. First, he rejected the subjective horn -
Quality is in the mind of the subject (just what you like). There's no
problem with that - not in the Lila Squad. But Pirsig also rejects the
objective horn. Quality is not an inherent property of the object -
sitting out there waiting to be discovered. DQ is prime reality, so Bo
and Theo give it the highest honour - absolute objectivity! This seems
to me like sacrificing animals to a vegetarian god.
BO himself states a contradiction
>- You are correct: Quality is prior to recognition [but]- or: Quality
IS
recognition. VALUE IS EXPERIENCE!
The first statement is the same as Theo's; the second says something
quite different.
DQ depends on the SO split for its DEFINITION - that is the definition
we give it in the only language we know. Definition is not the same as
creation!
