[Moderator's note: Apologies to the posters of the two messages just coming
through now. I'm in the process of moving and on vacation and these sat in
my in box for a long time. I was going to wait on approving this one until
we officially switched to chapter 3, but our discussion seems to have dried up,
so I'm going to pass it through to see if it spurs discussion on that chapter.]

Chapter 3 introduces us to Dusenberry. He is another heratic of Phaedrus's
"Church of Reason". Phaedrus mentions that academically he would have been
sorted into the TOUGH pile (dont the catagories used on the index cards
make an interesting analitical knife?). What was his great sin that so
annoyed the other anthropologists? He felt you had to include peoples
values into anthropology and not just data about them. Cultures are based
upon values.

So where do we get our values? In some cases we get them from our
culture or from the people we associate with. We can also get them from our
parents, our churches, and our philosophy.

Somewhere in here I picture a pair of snakes, each one has the others
tail in its mouth and is trying to devour it. Philosophy and Culture are
part of our sources of values, and yet our Culture is based on our values.
Now here comes RNP telling us that we can get our philosophy from our values
too.

If I've missed something or gotten it wrong feel free to enlighten me.
