Steve,
Thank you for your response. It is comforting to have another heathen in
the group. I don't have you on the Lila Squad list that I have. You must be
one of the lurkees that Diana was talking about. Give us your bio so that
we can fit you into our mental image of the group.
I really don't agree with you that looking at the universe in the way
that we do is not fun. To me it is a lot of fun and more interesting if I
have the lure of the Grand Breakthrough to think about. As of now it looks
like everything is up for grabs.
I just don't have the head for the philosophizing. I read the arguments
closely and think that I have them figured out and as soon as I look away
or close the book it all goes. Guess we are cursed with literal minds.
I see the whole picture, right from the presumed Big Bang, to be a
process of evolution. Everything just fits and seems to be right. I would
like to know who or what laid out the process that resulted in the original
list of elements. Once we get that far everything seems to just follow
naturally.
As far as the gap between the highest animals and us. We have to keep in
mind that it is not a gap. The archeological record pretty much supports
the growth of intelligence from the higher animals to us. Chimpanzees and
such. Several protohumans and early humans fill the gap. It makes one
wonder why God drew the line with humans. Why not include possums and
goldfish.
None of these speculations detract from Pirsig's metaphysics of quality.
His MOQ still works just as he said it did. That Quality is different for
each individual and operates to select those elements from the sea of
awareness that enter our individual consciousnesses. That seems to fit
better with the variation in individuals that we see through history and
currently. Also the growth of ethics through history. Steve, all of this is
fascinating and fun to me.
My E-mail got hung up Friday night. My server said that someone went me a
ten megabyte message and locked up the system. I finally got 31 of the
messages and lost two. Did anybody send me a book or something like that. I
lost the big one. Steve, come out in the open and join the fun. Or maybe
you are a newbie and just not on the list yet.
I agree with Platt, maybe we should restrict the flow to the principles
question until we get it nailed down. Ken Clark
