MD Re: Root of all evil?

Hmmm... I don't venture opinions often, but decided to bite on this one.

Ayn Rand defined money as "a" (NB: not "the") tangible expression of
value. (qv. Atlas Shrugged). I found this definition extremely
interesting in view of the key points of Lila, where value is the driving
force behind all forms of reality, and is created as the result of the
interplay between DQ and SQ.

>From this it is possible to fit money earned from drugs sales and money
earned from developing a cure for cancer (for example) into the MOQ.
Money is an intellectual creation, it properly belongs in the realm of
abstraction, where it provides a method for quantifying value (though
obviously not an infallible method). Although money properly belongs as
an expression of intellectual quality, it's presence and effect is felt
in the biological and social realms of quality as well. For example,
money (an intellectual creation) can permit the existence of prostitution
(a biological creation) and thus offend (social) morality. Social quality
lashes out both at prostitution and money, as both are offending its own
quality hierarchy. Given the conflict that RP identifies in Lila when the
"values" of differing quality levels meet, it is easy to see how phrases
such as "money is the root of all evil" (or even the more accurate "love
of money is the root...etc) can emerge, they encapsulate the dissension
between differing quality levels.

>From an intellectual quality level, money has no meaning (or quality of
its own), for it is a tangible representation of value, therefore its
quality is inextricably linked to the quality of the value it represents.
Moving from this point, the abolition of money would seem illogical. As
money is an expression of intellectual quality, it would be outranked in
an MOQ only by DQ. But as RP points out, we cannot exist solely within a
DQ realm. So I think money stays.
