DMB: A heckler's dream. He and I had an exchange that had the whole place
laughing.
ERIN: DMB a heckler? surprise surprise.
DMB:Art is what puts me in touch with the divine.
ERIN: I can agree that art can put you in touch with the divine.
As for replacing religion, I don't know because a lot of things
can do that. This person into sailing told me that it is
a religion for some. Whatever floats your boat I guess (pun intended).
My summer job is an usher at Blossom Music Center. Iget to see a whole bunch
of major events sponsered by house of blues during the week and the Cleveland
Orchestra on the weekends all for free.. it is quite nice.
DMB:>For the past few years I've been very excited by a genre of music that
you
>might not be familiar with. Its called alternative country, which is a bit
>misleading.
ERIN: is that music for alternative hicks? just kidding
DMB: It allows for a greater range of
>freedom and innovation. There is a dyanmic quality that can't be duplicated
>by corporate stars. It has a edgey, ironic quality that can't be pinned down
>and isn't easily commodified. There are lots of variations within the genre,
>but generally speaking one could say that it has a simple sound based on
>traditional American forms like, country, folk, bluegrass, but the
>sensibility is decidedly Punk.
ERIN: One of my favorite performers of all time is Ani Difranco. I first
saw her when she opened up for Bob Dylan. Amazing. i don't know if she is
alternative country or not but she is a mixture of folk and punk. Anyone who
buys Living in Clip will not be disappointed. Instead of signing
on with a major record label made it on her own by starting her
own independent one. I don't know if it was you or Squonk that mentioned
Woody Guthrie but she brought together a whole bunch of artists
to do a tribute to him. I don't own that particular record but
heard it and was good.
DMB:It has a very, very country sound. Its shamelessly
>twangy. Upon hearing this sound, one might expect the lyrics to be about
>pickup trucks, getting drunk, or patriotic sentiments. Instead, its a song
>about the necessity of experience over dogma in matters spiritual. Its
>called "Hallelujah Shine".
ERIN: I know what you mean. There are some good country singers
like John Prine but most just get too twangy. One of the
free concerts I skipped at work was Kevin Chesney. He opened
up for somebody last year I worked and sang a song "she thinks
my tractor sexy". Too much.
