I study popular music in a formal academic environment.
The field has no platform as such; there is very little agreement as to how
popular music should best be understood.
I find this exceptionally frustrating as i feel sure you can appreciate?
The influence of popular music is huge. I began study feeling this to be the
case, but as i got deeper into it, began to see a massive area of potential
for the application of a metaphysics of quality.
Would anyone in the forum wish to engage in exploring popular music from an
MOQ perspective? I tell you openly: I should like to apply any progress into
the academic arena.
As it stands the main contexts for popular music study appear to have been
borrowed from cultural studies. More specifically, from study of media;
popular music can be regarded as mediated text. This puts is right into
semiotics.
Philosophically speaking, semiotics was developed by philosophers, but it has
developed a tinge of idealism? Emphasis is placed upon the text and
individuals go out the window. Culture is text, text is mediated - we use
media and that's pretty much the top and bottom of it?
One interesting area highlighted by this approach, and one i find
illuminating, is the mediated manipulation of individuals by those who are
privileged to be in a position to enable them to have media project their
preferred reality?
To put that same point another way: The realities we experience in media are
using us.
Enter the Giant!
I have a feeling cultural studies are biographies of Giants?
History is full of these Giants and their character traits - perhaps we could
help to illuminate these Giants in MOQ terms?
Our society may have more than one Giant in relationship with others?
The MOQ may clear things up.
