Hi Roger,
ROGER:
'I just finished reading "Monad to Man" by Michael Ruse. This book tracks the
history of evolutionary thought and its connections to the philosophy of
Progress.
The creationists insist in a literal view of Genesis.
Now, how's this for irony:
Evolution is Hobbsian; it is completely ruthless and some might say evil?
But society moves away from this ruthlessness and we identify this move by
comparing the state of societies with biological striving for resources.
Therefore, the evolution of society is towards a better level regardless of
religious beliefs because it is empirical.
But the creationists wish to argue that God created the dreadful soup from
which society emerged and celebrate his glory in doing so?
Therefore, creationists suffer a value conflict between an intuitive fear of
biological rampage confirmed by a scientific theory of evolution, and knowing
that society is better but cannot find a description of why this should be so
in science because science cannot deal with values.
The fear creationists experience is driving them toward the very description
evolution that society has evolved to save them from. This could be the
future of America.
Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand.
Ignorance and prejudges and fear walk hand in hand.
Squonk.
