Dear Platt and Andrea,
A short contribution (while trying to find time to resume earlier
discussions after my vacation and catching up with 500+ postings and 30-50
postings a day):
Platt asked 25/7 8:47 -0400:
'Does the MOQ support design or purpose in evolution?'
(I don't agree with rephrasing this as:
'Is Pirsig a teleologist ... or ... would Pirsig agree ... that evolution is
mindless?'
As you know for me 'the MoQ' is not identical with Pirsig's ideas.)
Andrea supposed 25/7 15:58 +0200:
'both "blind, purposeless" and "designed, purposeful" evolution are really a
pair of bull's horns and the
"truth" lies in between them'.
I think the MoQ holds that the purpose of EVOLUTION is escape from static
patterns of values the result -somewhat paradoxally- is the CREATION of ever
more static patterns of values. The additional static patterns of values
created reach ever higher levels of complexity, BECAUSE they offer ways of
escape from lower level static patterns of values.
Meaning (beyond intellectual level's 'truth') does not lie in between the
bull's horns, but combines them.
'Creative evolution' BOTH blindly moves away from chaos/DQ AND makes static
patterns of values migrate toward DQ/freedom.
I think my position conforms enough to what Pirsig wrote in chapter 11 of
'Lila' to be able to claim that this is 'THE MoQ position'.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
